Lately - January 2024 Edition

We’re 10 days into the newest year and since we had a snow day on Sunday, the sermon for this coming Sunday is all but done (it’s only finished when it’s preached…even then, there’s always edits that should have been) That’s left me with a little time to share another edition of “lately”

What’s “Lately?”

From the first edition, in February 2023 - “From time to time I’ll collect some random things floating in my mind and ask others to contribute, and share them all with you. Notes, verses, podcasts, videos, books, etc. They say sharing is caring.Like the sunset from Tuesday night from the Armory in Prescott pictured above.

C.S. Lewis has a profound insight on the human heart desiring to praise something/someone “I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment; it is its appointed consummation.”

Here’s a few things that I’ve enjoyed or am enjoying:

TOP OF THE LIST BY FAR BIG TIME

New Crossway Subscription. - Free 7 day trial then $19.99 for the first year.

Yes, there’s a slow financial death due to all the subscriptions for everything all the time these days. AND some come along which are simply WORTH IT. This year I’m focusing on reading and listening through the Bible a time or two. To help in that endeavor, Crossway released 7 new audio voices (Ray Ortlund, Jackie Hill Perry ((IRISH!)) Kristen Getty! and others.) In addition, you get access to multiple study bibles and two commentaries. It’s been a wonderful companion in my own formation so far this year. Find it here.

A short book series.

Austin Kleon is an artist/author with a fantastic weekly email newsletter I have shared in the past. He has a three book series on work and the creative process. While I don’t consider myself artistic or creative, I thoroughly enjoyed his wisdom, insights, and helpful quotes that have many life applications.

The books are: Steal Like an Artist. Show Your Work. Keep Going. (find them here. Also, the local library system has all three available)

Grumpy Sicilian Pizza - Pizza is wonderful. It is one of God’s great gifts to humanity. The boys and I tried the Grumpy Sicilian downtown last night, and Drew the pizzaiolo made a couple of memorable pies. Cheese and a Margherita. In my non-expert opinion, just the right levels of crunch, flavor, and freshness. Score of 8.3 from the Wolfinger boys. We will be returning soon.

Our middle son is currently learning how to play piano/keyboard and is doing all sorts of videos on YouTube, changing my algorithm in delightful ways. This video of Joshua Domfeh (an artist from the UK) jamming on a Nord keyboard was worth 4 minutes and 9 seconds.

What have you been enjoying these days? Drop me an email and perhaps I can compile a few from the good folks at Union for the next edition.
